A vacation typically refers to a trip or time away from work or daily routine, where the primary focus is on relaxation, unwinding, de-stressing, and indulging in leisure activities without many responsibilities.
For those traveling with kids, “relaxing, unwinding, de-stressing, and indulging in leisure activities without many responsibilities” is just not possible WHILE MEETING THE NEEDS OF YOUNG CHILDREN.
Prior to traveling with children, it is important for parents to set their expectations:
“This is not a vacation- this is a holiday”
For children, a holiday is about fun, excitement & New experiences. Children are often eager to explore and engage in various activities, and they may expect constant attention, playtime and involvement from their parents.
Conflict between parents can arise on ‘holiday’ when the desire for ‘vacation’ (relaxation & personal time) leaves one parent feeling the brunt of the parenting load.
It is crucial for parents to work together to meet the needs of their children, while also strategically planning time for each parent to have access to relaxation, de-stressing and leisure.
This looks like intentionally tag-teaming time ‘off’ for one parent to relax, while the other parent carries the weight of family life, and vice versa.
Having both parents actively engage in childcare while providing each other with opportunities for relaxation, creates a supportive & collaborative environment that is vital for maintaining a health relationship and a fulfilling holiday experience.
